Abhinaya Indian Spiritual Dancing

Abhinaya
Indian Spiritual Dancing

Abhinaya Indian Spiritual Dancing is dance, meditation and exercise woven together with grace and beauty. Drawing on Indian classical dance and sound philosophical principles, it brings energies into balance in a fun way and leaves the whole being revitalised and centred. Abhinaya also improves balance, co-ordination, efficiency and awareness.

The inner and outer are one - all is connected. Abhinaya helps us re-experience the power of that which precedes and influences the physical.

Where there is stillness, there is a rise in Consciousness. Dancers are guided to a simultaneous awareness of physical movement and complete inner rest.

"At the still point of the turning world...
there the dance is...
Except for the point, the still point,
There would be no dance, and there is only the dance."

(T.S. Eliot - Burnt Norton)

After many years of dancing in a variety of disciplines, Renée Oates set out on a search for a more spiritually enriching dance form. She was rewarded by her discovery of Abhinaya Indian Spiritual Dancing in the U.K. in 1994. Since then she has trained at various international centres and shared the delights of this dance with adults and children from all backgrounds. Renée has been a student of Practical Philosophy since 1985, and of Sanskrit since 1988, both of which are intimately connected with and influence the dance. She has passed international exams in Sanskrit and tutors in both subjects from time to time.

One of the meanings of the Sanskrit word "abhinaya" is "leading towards", and this dance form uses the word in the sense of leading dancers towards their true Self. (The word is also used in classical Indian dance as a technical term for the conveying of meaning and emotion through gesture.)

Abhinaya reconnects us with that stillness which underlies all movement.

Abhinaya enhances body-mind-spirit awareness. Dancing in accordance with the following Sanskrit text is transformative.

"Where the hand goes, the eye goes
Where the eye goes, there the mind follows
Where the mind is, there the heart is also
Where the heart is, there love arises."

(Nandikesvara - Abhinayadarpanam)
